  • Moyse International Flute Competition – Sofia NBU

    Président d’Honneur / Honorary president

    SIR JAMES GALWAY

Flute Master and student of Marcel Moyse

Music is the most intense and interior art that man has produced, a universal expression that unites places and cultures. It doesn't need translations, it speaks through sensitivity and intellectual values. The musician becomes not only an interpreter, but also a mediator of culture.

The New Bulgarian University and the Italian Embassy in Sofia, intend to support this role and give young performers new possibilities for cultural mediation, organizing together, as proof of a cultural friendship with common aims, an international flute competition, in which new generation interprets make themselves known and recognized in their values.

Luisa Sello, PhD professor at NBU and appointed by the music department for the artistic direction of the competition, created the Moyse International Flute Competition with the aim of expanding the already present friendship between Italian and Bulgarian institutions and internationally promoting the Doctoral Degree section for the PhD in Flute Performance at the NBU.

Marcel and Louis Moyse, internationally recognized flutists, have had a fundamental influence on the flute school of the last century, both in teaching, composing and publishing. The ‘Moyse International competition’ in Sofia, offers some of their works, composed or dedicated to them, together with the most important flute repertoire that privileges the Italian and Bulgarian music, with a view to a cultural friendship between the two countries, developed around interpreters and artists of both side.

The Rules and the Jury are focused on rewarding not only technical skill of the candidates, but also their charisma, intelligence and comprehension of the text as well as their communication skills, such as necessary part in every art. The purpose of the awards will not only be the search for mere technicality, but also the enhancement of the true individual values of the artistic quality.

Winners will receive prizes, benefits and concerts.

All candidates will receive a diploma of participation during the winners' announcement. Certificates for teachers of categories A, A1 and B winners will be given on request.

In obtaining both her ArtD in Performing Arts and her PhD in Linguistic and Literary Sciences, she studied in Paris with Raymond Guiot and Alain Marion, who proclaimed her “very musical, superb,” at the Accademia Chigiana with Severino Gazzelloni, who remarked her “magnificent interpretive sensibility and excellent sound”, and with Conrad Klemm in Rome who wrote about her ‘virtuosity without sacrificing expressiveness’. She records for Stradivarius, Dynamic (Italy) and Millennium (Beijing).

Matthias Ziegler is one of the world’s most versatile and innovative flutists.
He is committed both to the traditional literature for flute as well as to contemporary music and concepts that cross the boundaries between classical music and jazz.

Accordingly, his performances take place in a vast range of contexts:  he plays principal flute with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, has toured with the percussionist Pierre Favre and performed with the pianist George Gruntz as well as with the American contrabass player Mark Dresser. He is also a member of the ”Collegium Novum Zurich“, where he has worked with Mauricio Kagel, Heinz Holliger and George Crumb.

Concert tours have brought him to the US, Japan, Australia, South America and Israel. Many recordings on CD document his inclusive musical interests.
Matthias Ziegler currently teaches at the Zurich University of the Arts.

Searching for new sounds he enormously broadened the expressive potential of the traditional flute and the electroacoustically amplified contrabass flute.

Amplifying the flute allows him to increase the volume of the microsound structures of the flute to an audible level. Inspired by the new dimension of sounds of these instruments, composers such as Michael Jarrell from Switzerland, Benjamin Yusupov from Tadjikistan, Mathias Rüegg from the Vienna Art Orchestra and the American Mark Dresser wrote flute concertos for him.

Matthias Ziegler performs on a flute manufactured by Louis Lot (1880), on a quartertone flute Brannen/Kingma system, on a Alto- and Bassflute by Eva Kingma (Holland) as well as on his own invention, the ”Matusiflute”, a uniquely designed instrument with a vibrating membrane. His contrabassflute has been constructed by Kotato Fukushima (Japan).
